La Joya ISD Seventh Grader Named National Finalist in Prestigious STEM Competition
La Joya, TX - La Joya ISD student Nathan Gael Montelongo is taking his STEM talents to the national stage after being selected as one of only 30 national finalists in the 2026 Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge (JIC), a premier STEM competition for middle school students founded and produced by the Society for Science.
Montelongo, a student at Lorenzo de Zavala Middle School, earned his place among the national finalists from a highly competitive pool of 1,997 applicants representing 47 states, Washington, D.C., and five U.S. territories. His selection marks an extraordinary achievement and brings national recognition to the STEM talent being developed within La Joya ISD classrooms.
“This is an incredible accomplishment for Nathan and a proud moment for our entire district,” said Brenda Garcia, Executive Director of K-12 Mathematics and Science for La Joya ISD. “To be selected among just 30 students from nearly 2,000 applicants across the country speaks to Nathan’s curiosity, determination and passion for STEM. He is demonstrating what our students are capable of when their talents are nurtured, challenged and supported, and we are excited to see him represent La Joya ISD on the national stage.”
As a finalist, Montelongo will travel to Washington, D.C., in October to participate in the national competition. During the event, finalists will have the opportunity to demonstrate their STEM knowledge and skills in areas including critical thinking, communication, creativity and collaboration.
Behind Montelongo’s accomplishment is the support of his sponsor, Maria Isabel Reyna of Irene Garcia Middle School, whose encouragement and guidance have helped him advance throughout his STEM journey.
“Watching Nathan reach this level has been incredibly rewarding,” Reyna said. “He approaches science with genuine curiosity and is always willing to challenge himself, ask questions and keep learning. I am extremely proud of everything he has accomplished, and I know he will represent La Joya ISD with pride in Washington, D.C.”
The recognition adds to Montelongo’s growing list of STEM accomplishments and highlights La Joya ISD’s continued commitment to creating opportunities for students to explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics beyond the classroom.
As Montelongo prepares to compete alongside some of the nation’s top young STEM innovators, he will carry with him the support of his campus, district and community - while showcasing the exceptional student talent found throughout La Joya ISD.
